Aldingbourne Blog

There are many social enterprises across the Aldingboune Trust, so we have set up this blog to tell you more
about what we do.  Our staff, volunteers and the people we support are always up to something, and we
want to share their experiences with you.

Their first night led by Tony Jolly was a great success, where they enjoyed Roleplaying Games, Warhammer, D&D, wargames, model building and painting. They are looking forward to their next session on Thursday 6thFebruary.

‘Hello Portsmouth LD Community!

Gig Buddies Portsmouth had the pleasure of being invited to the Portsmouth City Council annual LD Celebration and Learning event at Gunwharf Quays on Friday, 24th January. We took our fantastic volunteer, Holli, to spread the word of what we do and how we can support Portsmouth-based adults with a learning disability to expand their social circle and enjoy leisure activities with a volunteer. The event was a great success, with lots of interest in the Gig Buddies project, so much so we ran out of signup forms.

Holli lead her first ever presentation and did a wonderful job in promoting Gig Buddies to the many Care Providers, Healthcare Professionals, Parents and Carers – well done Holli! We are looking forward to grow the project with the help of these events; to showcase the value of volunteering and making a difference in your local community.’

Leading the way in Co-Production across the Trust

It is important that the people we support at the Aldingbourne Trust take part in activities across the Trust and work together to improve the support we provide for them.

We recently looked into changing the way we do risk assessments to ensure they are accessible for the people we support.  To help us do this, we set up a group and invited staff and people we support to participate working together in co-production.

Having discussed what we all felt was important to include, we now have a risk assessment for the people we support which has been designed to ensure they are able to lead in the risk assessment process and design/agree the measures they need to reduce the risk. The risk assessment is also colour coded in Red, amber and green to provide a visual regarding the level of risk.

East Wittering Fire Station Visit

A group of clients visited the East Wittering Fire Station on Thursday 16th January to learn about fire safety, the importance of smoke alarms in the home and how fire fighters respond to emergencies such as fires, car crashes and sea rescues. The clients had a great time as they got to sit in a fire engine and rescue boat and they even had a go with the fire hoses.

The Trust would like to thank to our lovely volunteer Claire Seaby for arranging the visit, Ruby for managing the logistics of getting us all there, Louise for driving and finally massive thanks to Neil and John, the fire fighters, for showing us around the station.

Collaboration in the Community

The Aldingbourne Trust as pleased to be working in collaboration with PACSO (Parent and Carers Support Organisation), which is a Chichester based charity that supports children and young people aged 0-25 with additional needs. They provide respite and leisure activities, as well as opportunities such as work experience.

On Wednesday the 15th January, PASCO hosted their first Dining Club at our Drop In Centre at No73 Aldwick Road.  This is the first of a series of sessions they will be running,  teaching the people they support with skills such as laying the table, serving drinks, preparing meals and the all important washing up!  The Trust is pleased to be helping them by providing the facilities for them to use, and you can see by the photos that they really enjoyed their first session.

Trip to London

The Trust was recently invited to take part in the Small Business Saturday event in London.  One of the people we support, Andrew Pickthall went to the event to represent the Trust along with Leah Moore from our marketing team.
To make the most of his visit to London, Andrew took the opportunity to sight see whilst visiting the city.  Having taken the train to London Victoria, they took the tube to Westminster station where they took in the sights of Buckingham Palace.  Walking to Parliament Square, Andrew enjoyed seeing the statues, including the one of Winston Churchill.
The event they were attending was hosted at the House of Lords, where they entered via Black Rod’s Garden to the Cholmondeley room and terrace which overlooks the River Thames.  With a drink's reception and buffet, Andrew enjoyed tucking into the food.  He was very confident telling people about the Trust and what he does at the Country Centre.  There were several speeches throughout the event, including one from The Rt Hon. the Lord Young of Graffham CH DL.

After the event at the House of Lords they made their way back to Victoria Station for the journey home, where one of Andrew’s highlights of day was being treated to a Burger King for all his help during the visit that day.

We are the Lucky Charm for Portsmouth FC

14/1/2020

Picture
Gig Buddies Portsmouth have some members who are big fans of the local football club, Portsmouth FC, so we collaborated with a local not for profit, Pompey in the Community, and were given some tickets to attend games against Lincoln City and AFC Wimbledon.

We were lucky enough to meet Nelson, the Pompey Mascot and took a trip to the training ground to meet the players and Manager, Kenny Jackett. So far we have proven to be a lucky charm with Pompey winning both games we have attended.
Our Gig Buddies are incredibly grateful for the opportunity given us by Pompey in the Community and the wonderful staff and players at the club. One of our Gig Buddies has decided to purchase a season ticket to watch the team each week next season and said: “It was awesome! I got to meet my favourite player and had my shirt signed by him.” All in all an incredibly positive experience which shows you can make your dreams a reality with a little help from your buddies! - Mike Harris, Gig Buddies Coordinator
