Aldingbourne Blog

There are many social enterprises across the Aldingboune Trust, so we have set up this blog to tell you more
about what we do.  Our staff, volunteers and the people we support are always up to something, and we
want to share their experiences with you.

GoodGym run to help community projects…

Our MAKE enterprise in Fratton were overjoyed when the Fratton GoodGym group came to help them with a little project.  Their customer toilet was looking very tired, so they came and helped one day by stripping and painting the room ready for it to be decorated.

GoodGym groups want to get fit by doing good.  They are local groups of runners that combine regular exercise with helping within the local community.  They help local residents with one off projects, the elderly who need a helping hand and local community projects like MAKE.

The Team at MAKE were so grateful of the extra pairs of hands, they now have a blank canvas on their walls ready to get ideas from the people we support about how they can decorate it.

South Downs College LD students learning skills for life at MAKE...

A group of pre-internship students form the learning disability group at South Downs College visit our MAKE enterprise in Fratton each week.  They are learning to improve their maths, English and life skills, which helps to support their employability.  The students are currently working on a craft project which teaches them design, resourcing and monetary skills.  By upcycling items that are no longer of use, they want to create crafts to encourage recycling and help reduce waste.

Working on different themes throughout the year they have recently put together a range of items to sell for Valentine’s day.
These items on display and available for purchase at our MAKE enterprise who support them in learning these important life skills.  Matt and Lauren were proud to be showing their crafts skills at MAKE on their recent visit.

The students are now working towards ideas and designs for Mother’s Day by creating mood boards.  They will then discuss which items they are able to make, source the materials they need to make them, decide on the prices and then display them to sell.

As part of this project they are working towards raising money so that they can all enjoy a day out together at Chessington in the Summer.  They have raised over £500 already towards their trip and will continue to have fun making items for Easter and the Summer.

Our MAKE enterprise over in Fratton teaches the people we support art and craft skills to help them express themselves through the way they experience the world.

Art provides a way to explore your life and feelings, it can have a positive effect on mood, function, behavior and cognition.  Buy working with the people we support with different art projects, they have lots of fun creating and exploring different skills and techniques.

They have recently been looking at the surreal artwork of Pablo Picasso, by creating their own collages of the staff, volunteers and friends at MAKE.

Their artwork is on display for everyone to see, so why not pop into MAKE in Cornwall Road next time you are in Fratton and don’t forget to try one of their delicious homemade cakes too!
