MAKE & Gig Buddies

Make is just one of the Trust’s innovative projects supporting adults with learning disabilities and / or autism to develop skills within their Cafe´, Charity Shop and in Creative Workshops to enable people to lead independent lives and gain employment within the community. Gig Buddies Portsmouth is also apart of the Aldingbourne Trust, located in Make, which is a free scheme funded by Portsmouth City Council to match a volunteer and adult with a learning disability and / or autism in Portsmouth.

Due to Covid 19 we have had to close MAKE & Gig Buddies to the public and the people we support however with the use of technology, activity packs and communication they are still giving Gr8 Support daily...
MAKE@Aldingbourne
Make have been in close contact with all the people they support and their volunteers. They have been calling everyone once a week, texting and communicating via whats app and the closed Facebook page.

The Facebook page is always packed with new activities for each day, silly pictures and jokes. They hold a weekly cookery live session on the page where they have made all sorts of yummy foods, they are also keeping a presence on the ACC live with Jen and Em Facebook page by doing a craft session.

A few of our staff members have also visited some of the people we support from a social distance, including one of the people on his birthday as a surprise.

Make have created Activity Packs for all the people they support, the activities are picked for each individual needs and abilities so every pack is different.

All the activities are designed so they have a purpose and outcome;

○ Retail activities such as ticket writing practice and sale ideas which can be applied when they return.

○ Story writing which they can have made into books to sell and also for the people we support to hold children's story time at Make

○ Designing take away food bags

○ Planting carrot seeds so they can produce a carrot cake in the future
MAKES Spring Fling raised £1290.

It was a fun packed day with competitions, cookery demos, craft demos, Tracy ran a half marathon, Emma's fun quiz  and we had live performances from
Sassy Harvey Imaginations Party with a Princess, Puffin Boy , Hannah Clarke, Keith Simon, Not Noel Gallagher , Amba Tremain , Steve Kingsley.

Not only did we raise a lot of money but we reached people who wouldn't normally come to the events.We have been approached by someone so impressed with our clients videos that he would like to work with us promoting positive mental health. We had some great feedback and although the day was quite emotional because we weren't altogether it was the next best thing. A lot was learnt from the day and we have already put in place a fortnightly live quiz for the people we support on the closed page. A monthly puppet show for the Make page. Craft and cookery demos to go out on the Make page also.

Gig Buddies Portsmouth
Our Gig Buddy Coordinator has been contacting our Buddy Participants and Volunteers via phone calls and messaging to ensure those without access to social media and/or internet are able to stay healthy and happy.  Also a Newsletter  has been sent to people on our mailing list, which includes activities to do and ways to maintain healthy mental and physical health.

They have created fun activities such as;

○  Live Zoom Quizzes – Using a laptop or smartphone, each week there is the opportunity for a number of people to get involved in a live online quiz, created and managed by the Project Coordinator to retain the group social element via video chat, whilst being engaged and entertained with a quiz. The quiz themes so far have been Disney films and Music to offer a variety to attendees.

○  Weekly video chats through House Party App at a set day/time for Buddies to catch up with one another and allow us to check their well being.

○  They have also run competitions for fun such as submitting art for Gig Buddies to appreciate – the newest competition is for a dance and sing video to be submitted, of Gig Buddies dancing to their favourite song on our Facebook page.

○  Our Gig Buddy Dan Donovan, aka DJ Flavor, has a weekly Facebook Live slot every Tuesday from 2pm on the Gig Buddies Portsmouth Facebook page playing Buddy song requests and his own favourites – check the page and place your requests in the comments section.
