Nothing compares to seeing someone’s face when they tell you they have been offered a job; whether their first steps into a career or an exciting career change. The reality behind those faces is one that is pretty much the equivalent of running a marathon every time they apply for a role, but actually with extra hurdles, route changes and dead ends along the way.
WorkAid provide a vital community support service- journeying alongside people who have disabilities and autistic people through every stage of the process. Years of repeated cuts have dramatically reduced the capacity of the service and our waiting list is growing- yet another setback and hurdle for people to have to overcome before they can even access support they desperately need.
For those who know me, I have always said I wouldn’t ever run a marathon. Well… here we are, and now I’m practically running a half marathon every weekend in training- in-between championing Supported Employment in my secondment with the DWP and being mum to an almost-certainly neurodiverse daughter who is facing her own battles.
For almost 10 years I have watched the faces of hundreds of people light up and seen employers and their new employees embrace diversity, change and the future. On 6th April I will be donning the orange T-shirt again- every step of the 26.2 mile course of Brighton Marathon is for the 1000s who want to work, and are on their journey to careers and lives which are true reflections of their talent and skills.
I believe in the work we do and the power of people we support.
